kristian pickles

growing cucumbers, carrots, and green beans in small batches. brining and bottling at home in sonoma. fully organic and natural. coming in 2012

Permalink The Beast is currently in the shop being worked on. Some issues with the Holley carb are holding it back from full-time truck status.

It’s a badass edition to the Kristian Pickles enterprise.

I found it via Craigslist and hours and hours of research. It came out of a dairy farm here in Sonoma.

None of this would have been possible without the relentless support of Brian. Who not only is my most awesome mechanic, but is also my brother (in-law).

If there is something wrong or ailing on this truck, Brian has a solution. And although the task of transforming the vehicle into a true pickle Beast has been long, I think that taking the time to do it right the first time is better than wasting time and money later on down the road.

Big Thank You to Brian for all your help!!

Viagra Pickle Ad from China

My friend’s father sent me this image today regarding pickles and viagra. Apparently he took it on the metro while in China.

Oh pickles, how you make me smile so.

Permalink Just another day…
Permalink Tonight I read an article in the Marin IJ regarding current rates of rainfall in Marin and their affect on the water ecosystem of the area. Kudos to Mark Prado for his helpful article.
I was surprised to learn a couple of facts:
75 % of the water we drink in Marin comes from our local reservoirs, while 25 % is diverted from the Russian River via a contract ( I wonder how old this negotiation has been in place).
There have only been 17 occurrences in the last 134 years where we have received less than 20 inches of rain (between July 1st and March 1st)
Phoenix Lake is actually a reservoir reservoir. It was last used in 1992 for its water supply.
Its going to cost $16,000 to pump the 140-acre-feet of water from Phoenix Lake to Lake Lagunitas (where the water treatment plant is located).
The Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) supplies water for 185,000 people across 147 square miles.
There are 325,851 gallons in an acre-foot of water; enough to supply about three families for a year.

Green Gage Farms

Tomorrow I am slated to work with Nancy of Green Gage Farms up in Novato. Not very certain what we will work on, but I am looking forward to checking out her 2-acre site.

It was formerly a turkey farm and has since been converted over the last four-five years into a sustainable playground for agriculturally curious children (she has kids come out and learn about gardening and farming). I hope that I can make a positive impact and bring some Kristian Pickles pride into the equation. From my understanding there are multiple types of fruit trees, some grapes (maybe?), and about 2 tons of rich compost ready to provide an award winning atmosphere that will germinate our next generation of vegetables. I have heard rumors that there are some two dozen chickens on the premises as well.

Farmers need to help each other at the end of the day. Its not going to be the government that saves us, its going to be hard work and sweat. Otherwise, we go the way of Walmart and Made in Taiwan. I really hope this is not our future.

Will let you (my faithful readers) know how it goes.

Happy Planting!
